Ron, the most important word in your comment is "if". Let's talk about what we know. The Universe we live in is beyond human interference. We will live or die based on it. Face the fact that our Sun will be a Red Draft that, towards the end of its time in about 5 or 6 million years, will have grown to a size that will consume the Earth. In about 1 million years this dying star will be hot enough to cause the Earth to reach it's boiling poit. That is when we all die. There is no escape, but space travel which is underfunded. The average rate of global warming can be calculated by taking the average temperture of the Earth now from the boiling point and dividing that sum by 1 million years. That said, there is no reason to speed up the time table on this. But, we have enough time to get it right without destroying our economic system. Economics drives everything. And, without a healthy economy, nothing is sustainable. Get a grip on what is really important for the survivable of man, because the Earth is doomed regardless of what we do.
